LIVING IN A MEMORY

What is this song about? Living In The Memory is about friendships from the past. It's remembering your friends, missing them, but at the same time realizing that if you see them somewhere today, it probably won't be like you're imagining it in your mind. You have little movies in your head of how you'll see your friends and it'll be oh so fun and a 'catch up for all the lost times' kinda situation, but everyone grew up, and you might just not be as great of friends anymore. There might be no connection that you had before.

Why did I write this song? My mom went to Russia in the summer, and my friends from Russia sent me CD's with their photos. It brought back so many memories, and I was very sad again, remembering the great friendships that I left there. And I always imagine in my mind travelling over and seeing them again, and how we're going to catch up and be great friends again, but then once a thought occurred: will it even be like I'm imagining it to be? I think everyone was in this kind of situation somehow, whether they moved, switched schools or just lost touch with a good friend, and so everyone can relate to this song. I really hope it touches people. I've gotten some response from some of my friends that this song makes them think about the past. It's just the emotion I want to evoke with that song.

A lesson learnt? Instead of being sad over friends you're not friends with anymore, you should concentrate on the good friendships that you have now, like a part of Living In The Memory that was cut out, because it didn't fit musically, but it summarizes that idea:
"There's one thing I can tell you,
Hold on to what you've got,
'Cuz 10 years down the line,
You're gonna wish you had just that."

Also there are people who are in great relationships, even marriages where one (or maybe both) partners think "What if I was with that person that I was dating when I was X number of years...," not realizing what a great husband/wife they have now. It's a green grass on the other side phenomenon. You gotta see the beauty in your present life and not dwell in the past. Memories are great though. I love memories.

Why does this song have a different feel from the other three songs on your CD? When I was writing this song, right away I heard a band - guitar, drums, bass and piano playing. So that's the only way I wanted to record it. My friends from the University Music Program that I'm studying in helped me with the track. Ann Wilson is an amazing drummer who plays with Stereo Vision, and when we were practicing before the recording - she picked up my ideas right away. Nathan DaSilva who plays in Atma played the guitar and bass on this recording. I didn't need to tell him what to do. I gave him the chords and he did his thing. It was really great to work with knowledgeable musicians.

Also I love rock music, and I definitely want to do some pop, as well as rock songs on the CD. You'll hear other fusions and influences on future songs as well: some blues, soul and mid-eastern influences perhaps.
